Importing repositories

The importer copies a repository’s Git history, branches, and tags from another host into a new repository, hosted with Tangled or on your own knot. Issues, pull requests, and other forge data are not imported presently.

You don’t need the importer if you have the repository locally: create an empty repository and push to it, as shown in Quick start.

  1. Open the importer and choose the URL option.
  2. Paste a public Git URL, such as https://example.com/repository.git.
  3. Set the name, an optional description, and the knot to import into (your saved knots).
  4. Start the import.

Tangled checks that the source is reachable, then your knot fetches it directly.

The GitHub importer handles public and private repositories:

  1. Head to the importer.
  2. Authorize the importer to grant read access to your GitHub account.
  3. Configure repositories and migrate them!
