# Vouch network

> Vouch for or denounce accounts, and see the trust signals from your network.

Vouching serves as a signal of trust to your circle. You can vouch or
denounce users that you interact with. It is a signal of trust to your
circle. Your circle can view vouch descisions made by you. Vouching on
Tangled is inspired by the [vouch](https://github.com/mitchellh/vouch)
project by Mitchell Hashimoto. Read the [blog
post](https://blog.tangled.org/vouching/) to know more.

## Vouch or denounce

Open a profile and select **Vouch**. Then select **Vouch** or
**Denounce**. You can add an optional reason, up to 256 characters. When
vouching for a user from the a PR submission, Tangled automatically adds
the PR record to the vouch record's evidences list.

## The network

Tangled collects vouch records from every account. It shows a "hat" on a
profile at points of interaction:

- issues and issue comments, and
- pull requests and pull request comments.

A green hat is a vouch. A red hat is a denouncement.

A hat appears only in two cases:

- you vouched for or denounced the account, or
- an account you vouched for made a decision about it.

Thus you see the decisions of your circle. Select the hat to see who
made the decision. Only a vouch extends your circle: a denouncement does
not add the account to your network. Two people can see different hats
for the same account.

## The effects of vouching

A vouch or a denouncement does not gate any permissions at the moment.
It does not hide anyone's issues or pull requests. It shows a hat only.
Use the hat to inform your decision. A denouncement has no consequence
for the other account at this time. Vouching is simply used to build
your trust network and inform your circle, actions are left up to the
end user.

:::caution

Reasons and evidence are public data in your account. Anyone can read
them, independent of any web app. Do not put private reports or personal
information in them.
