Test plan: aite #
Produced with the qa-manager skill (.claude/skills/qa-manager), 2026-10-09. Advisory input to the plan; see adversarial-review.md for the independent critique.
Inputs read: docs/PLAN.md (overview), docs/TASKS.md (33 tasks with acceptance criteria), docs/decisions.md, docs/journeys.md,
docs/design/{script-format,protocol,data-formats,locator-repair}.md. These together are the "plan with a task list".
Inputs not available: no research.md (the analysis of Google's BITE archive is inside PLAN.md section 2, and was done by the same author);
no code (nothing is built yet, so no existing tests or CI to inspect); no CI history or git history of bugs; Chrome behaviors cited in the
plan (MV3 service worker keep-alive, captureVisibleTab, Playwright loading extensions) were not tested here.
Assumptions I made:
- [ASSUMED] Consumers of the output are Alex and Qian only. If aite's reports are shown to others, the report (UIF) risk rises to High.
- [ASSUMED] Irreversible or high-consequence actions are: a public post on Bluesky from a test account, a GitLab issue created automatically,
a git history rewrite (D8), and any test that moves testnet funds. Testnet funds are low value; the posts and issues are public/visible.
- [ASSUMED] Review time available is about two hours per phase gate. If less, drop the Medium manual call-outs first (M-04, M-06).
- [ASSUMED] A false pass (the tool says green when the app is broken) costs far more than a false fail. The tiering is built on that.
- [ASSUMED] Chrome on
balrog auto-updates. If it is pinned, the Chrome-drift risk (section 0) drops.
Tier summary: 8 High / 19 Medium / 6 Low (33 tasks) as first written; after the review: 16 High / 26 Medium / 8 Low (50 tasks), see section 6.2.

0. Cross-cutting risks and what this plan cannot detect #
The central risk of a test tool is the false pass. A tool that reports green when the app is broken is worse than no tool, because people
stop looking. Most High-tier tasks are High for this reason (P2-2, P2-3, P3-2, P7-2). Every High task therefore gets a seeded-failure check.
Classes with no layer able to detect them here
- REQ (requirement misread): the claims "a human can tell in under a minute whether the app or the script is wrong" and "the report is
clearer than a written test log" are only checkable by an independent reader (M-01, M-04). Unit and functional tests cannot reach them. If
the cold readers are Alex or Qian after they have seen the design, the check is weak; use someone who has not (see question Q2).
- SCH (schedule/scope): each phase has an estimate ("2 days", "3 to 4 days") but the plan states no capacity, and the largest unknown (MV3
behavior, P1-2) is in Phase 1. Only REV can catch this; the adversarial review lens 2 covers it.
- UIF (the report and the confirm page): judgment only (M-01, M-04).
- NDT (real services): Bluesky OAuth and posting, Monad testnet RPC, GitLab availability, Chrome auto-updates. Tests can mock them; only
the first real runs (M-02, M-03) and scheduled runs (P7-3) show their behavior. The plan has no check that detects a Chrome version change
breaking the extension other than a failing run; I recommend recording the Chrome version in
run.json (already in data-formats.md) and
alerting when it changes (added as a case in P7-3).
Where tests and code share an author or reading of the plan
- The same agent will write the parser, the parser's tests, the fixture pages, and the scripts that test mallbucks. A misread of
script-format.md (for example what verifyNot means, or whether type appends or replaces) would be in both code and test. Mitigations:
known-answer vectors written from the spec's own examples by a human-readable table (P2-1), the seeded-failure checks, and the fixture
pages being plain HTML a person can read.
- The expected values in the mallbucks scripts come from the QA plan and logs written by the same agent family; M-04 (Qian) is the independent check.
Treated as done with no verification step
- P5-1 "Works after a reboot of balrog (documented)": documented does not mean tested; add a reboot test or drop the claim.
- P0-2 "README links both": no check; trivial, but the LICENSE text itself is not verified against the original (add a checksum comparison).
- PLAN.md section 4.2 thresholds (0.85, 0.60, 0.15) are starting values with no data; P3-3 tests the mechanism, not the thresholds. Real-data
tuning is an unowned task (new task T-N1 proposed in section 5).
- "Every real script starts with it (
needs session NAME)" (P5-3) has no enforcement: nothing fails a script that omits it (new case in P5-3).
Dependencies that could not be verified
- That an open websocket with a message every 15 s keeps an MV3 service worker alive in the Chrome version on balrog (P1-2 tests it; I did not).
- That
captureVisibleTab works when the test tab is not the focused window of a headed profile (the pay pop-up case, P6-3).
- That Playwright can load the unpacked MV3 extension for the CI self-check (P2-4). It requires a persistent context and the new headless mode;
if not, the self-check job cannot run and the plan has no fallback (new case in P2-4).
- That Git LFS is enabled on this GitLab (P0-1).
- That balrog can run a headed Chrome (display or Xvfb) (P5-1).

Convention: only cells that are plausible per the reach table in risk-and-layers.md are listed; each listed cell has exactly one state. Layers
not listed for a class are outside that layer's reach. PLAN(id) links to a case in section 2. U = UNREACHABLE.

3. Manual QA call-outs (index) #
MANUAL QA M-01 (task T-P4-7) Tier: H Why manual: trigger 1 and 2 (human judgment is the oracle for the headline claim; same author)
Charter: Explore the reports for broken.html and drift.html with a person who has not seen aite to discover whether they can say "app" or "script" correctly and how long it takes.
Time box: 45 minutes Who: at least 3 people who have not seen the design (not Alex, not Qian if possible) When: before Phase 5 starts
Setup: the two reports on a screen, no help text, a stopwatch.
Prompts: what do they read first; do they find "wanted/found"; do they trust the screenshot; what word confuses them; can they explain the three buttons.
Record: time per report, right/wrong verdict, every confusion in their words.
Pass/stop rule: see TASKS.md P4-7 (at least 6 reports, 3 app-broken, 3 script-drift, at least 2 ambiguous); a wrong or slow verdict beyond its threshold blocks Phase 5; confusions are logged and fixed.
MANUAL QA M-02 (tasks T-P5-4, T-P7-3) Tier: M Why manual: trigger 6 (first run of anything unattended)
Charter: Explore the first unattended scheduled run on balrog to discover what a person would need to see when nobody is watching.
Time box: 60 minutes Who: Alex When: after first run
Setup: the scheduled job, a throwaway failure ready, the renewal runbook.
Prompts: session expiry mid-run; Chrome update overnight; the display missing; the bridge port in use; a stuck run; what the failure issue looks like.
Record: surprises, time to understand each, runbook gaps.
Pass/stop rule: any run that posts publicly twice, creates duplicate issues, or hangs without reporting blocks enabling the schedule.
MANUAL QA M-03 (tasks T-P5-7, T-P6-2) Tier: H Why manual: trigger 3 (public posting)
Charter: Explore what the test accounts publish and leave behind to discover whether runs create public clutter or reveal anything real.
Time box: 30 minutes Who: Alex When: before the first scheduled run
Setup: the test account's public profile; list of posts before and after three runs.
Prompts: leftover posts; post text content; links to production gifts that could be claimed by strangers (a gift link in a public post can be claimed by anyone: how much does each gift hold?); handle/display name.
Record: posts left, gift value exposed.
Pass/stop rule: any post that survives cleanup or any gift worth more than a few testnet tokens blocks scheduling.
MANUAL QA M-04 (task T-P6-5) Tier: M Why manual: trigger 1 and 2 (the report's clarity versus a written log; requirement intent)
Charter: Explore a passing and a failing report next to Qian's written log for the same journey to discover which she would rather act on.
Time box: 45 minutes Who: Qian When: after Phase 6
Setup: the Phase 6 reports and her 2026-10-07 results.
Prompts: what information is missing; what is noise; would she trust a green; what would make her distrust it; repaired steps.
Record: specific changes she wants.
Pass/stop rule: "I would not trust a green" blocks scheduling; other notes become tasks.
MANUAL QA M-05 (task T-P5-2) Tier: M Why manual: trigger 3 (credentials, external accounts)
Charter: Explore how the test accounts are created and where their sessions live to discover credential leaks.
Time box: 30 minutes Who: Alex When: during Phase 5
Setup: the profile directory, repo, shell history.
Prompts: passwords in shell history; app passwords in notes; profile directory permissions; backups that copy the profile; the account recovery email.
Record: every place a secret was typed or stored.
Pass/stop rule: a secret in git or a world-readable profile blocks Phase 6.
MANUAL QA M-06 (tasks T-P4-3, T-P4-5) Tier: M Why manual: trigger 3 (automatic writes to a real tracker)
Charter: Explore the first "App is broken" click against the real project's tracker to discover noise or leaked data.
Time box: 20 minutes Who: Alex When: before enabling it against a real project
Setup: a throwaway project first, then one real issue.
Prompts: does the screenshot show anything private; is the title useful in a list; label and assignee defaults; does it link back.
Record: the issue as filed and anything to change.
Pass/stop rule: private data in an issue blocks.
MANUAL QA M-07 (tasks T-P7-2, section on claims) Tier: M Why manual: trigger 7 (public claims) and trigger 2 (intent)
Charter: Explore every claim in README/PLAN ("under a minute", "real session", "never passes silently") against a reproducible run before it is repeated to others.
Time box: 45 minutes Who: Alex When: before any announcement
Prompts: one claim at a time: reproduce it or soften the sentence.
Record: claim, evidence, verdict.
Pass/stop rule: a claim without a run stays out of the announcement.
4. Run order and gates #
Fast checks first, expensive last; one phase at a time.
- Gate 0: P0-5.b shows CI can fail (red, then green). Nothing else starts until it does.
- Gate 1: P1-2.a to f in CI, P1-2.e on balrog 5 of 5. If e fails, stop and redesign the transport before Phase 2 (alternatives: native messaging, or Playwright first per D2).
- Gate 2: Phase 2 seeded failures demonstrated (P2-2, P2-3), the self-check job red when the extension is broken (P2-4.b), and P2-1.d answered by a person other than the author.
- Gate 3: Phase 3 green with the caveat that the thresholds are unvalidated until P3-2.h on real pages (carried to Phase 6).
- Gate 4 (human): M-01 passes before any real account is used.
- Gate 5 (human): M-05, then P5-3.b observed, before the first real script.
- Gate 6: P6-4 negative run proves each script can fail; M-03 and M-04 before enabling schedules.
- Gate 7: P7-3.a to f and M-02; schedules stay off until all are done. P7-2.b and M-07 before anyone is told it works.
Runs once at the end: the real-account three-times-on-different-days checks (P6-1.a, P6-3).
5. Questions that most change this plan #
- Q1 What exactly should
type and verifyNot mean, and may a test with no verify pass? (Alex confirms; P2-1.d and P2-2.b depend on it.)
- Q2 Who are the independent cold readers for M-01 (people who have not seen the design)? Without them the headline claim is untestable.
- Q3 How much testnet value may a public gift link hold, and may test accounts post at all in scheduled runs (M-03)?
- Q4 Is Chrome on balrog pinned? If it auto-updates, a version change is the most likely cause of a sudden red; P7-3.d is the mitigation.
- Q5 Who owns tuning the repair thresholds with real data (unowned today)? Proposed new task T-N1.
Proposed task changes (for the task list; applied only where the user approves): T-N1 tune repair thresholds on real pages; T-N2 soak test of the
bridge for 1 hour; T-N3 secret-scan job in CI; T-N4 test-project for verdict automation (a throwaway GitLab project); T-N5 cold-reader recruits for M-01.
6. Changes after the adversarial review (2026-10-09) #
The review (adversarial-review.md) found 20 issues, all confirmed against the plan text. Where a finding changes the task list, the change is
recorded here with its test cases, so the GitLab issues carry them. Alex asked for tasks to be added and updated with proper testing; this
section is the record of that, not a rewrite of PLAN.md.
Renamed: P7-4 -> P6-8 (the guard against weakened verify lines must exist before the first AI-written script, F-07).

T-P2-6 Layered failure diagnosis Tier: H (why: a wrong diagnosis sends a person to fix the wrong thing, or hides an outage behind "the locator is out of date") #
Classes: LOG, CON, REQ, ENV, SEC, NDT. Layers: UNI for the rules, FUN against real faults, REV for the reader.
The central risk is blame by coincidence and a false all-clear. Every rule is tested with a fault that was really produced (fault server, TEST-NET address, .invalid name, local DNS and HTTPS servers, unshare -rn), and with a near miss.
