Merge the tide pool's lighter opening structure. tide-pool-ripples

committed 1mo ago

Grow the tide pool's opening structure low and long around the first pool's edge, open lattice and decks with few solid plates and nothing more than a few parts high, instead of one dense tower.

Merge the tide pool's lived-in opening, captions, and colours.

committed 1mo ago

Open the tide pool on a shelf that has lived a few tides: borers' pools dug down the shore, an artificer's structure standing in the first pool, a beacon and gates finished, the builders already at work, mid-afternoon with the tide going out and dusk a minute away, on a chosen shelf unless the address names another. While the view wanders on its own, a line under it says what it has found and what the machines in it are doing. Each kind of machine has its own colour on its body and in its eyes, the rock is paler by day, and the view opens closer with less of it blurred.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's browser tests for driving and night, its foam, and its wet rock.

committed 1mo ago

Give the tide pool real foam and wet rock: foam forms where water runs fast over the shallows, where a surge climbs the rock, where the surface steepens, and along a moving waterline, lingers as torn, bubbly patches and drains off the rock the water leaves; and rock the tide has just uncovered glistens with beads of water that catch the sun or moon, fading as it dries.

Add opt-in graphics isolation modes to diagnose phone context

committed 1mo ago

Test the tide pool while its view is driven with repeating keys and the pointer over the pool, which fails if the frame loop ever runs twice a frame, and at night, that the light floats clear of the floor and lights.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's foam without the honeycomb.

committed 1mo ago

Take the cell pattern out of the tide pool's foam; up close it reads as a honeycomb, so the foam gets a fine, uneven grain instead.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's drop ring on slopes and softer glow.

committed 1mo ago

Lay the tide pool's drop ring along the slope under it and draw it over anything in front, soften the glow's widest reach so a brightly lit spot no longer blooms into a square, and keep the night light a little higher over rock.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the fix for the tide pool stalling while the view is driven with the keys.

committed 1mo ago

Keep the tide pool smooth while the view is driven with the keys: the pointer's hover asked for the next frame during a frame, and the loop asked again, so every frame ran twice as many loops as the last until the page stalled.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's see-through water: the floor sways under the ripples on machines with room for it.

committed 1mo ago

Let the tide pool's floor be seen through its water: the solid scene is drawn first and copied with its depth, and the water shows it shifted where the surface slopes, so the floor, the fish and anything standing in the water sway under the ripples; it switches itself off on phones and whenever frames run slow.

Merge the cheaper tide pool renderer: fewer passes for the glow and blur, cheaper shadows and lights, and a resolution that eases further on slow machines.

committed 1mo ago

Merge main's turning view, map and settings into the cheaper tide pool

committed 1mo ago

Update public NOW with Misaligned and the tide pool; archive September 25

committed 1mo ago

Make the tide pool much cheaper to draw: the glow, the miniature's blur and the tone mapping take four passes instead of seventeen, shadows are read with four taps instead of sixteen, lamps and the visitor's light cost nothing while they are out, the sun's shadows are redrawn every other frame and the visitor's light's only while it is held, the rock is coarser far from the shelf, the water's surface skips dry rock, only the instances in use are sent each frame and empty meshes are left out, and the resolution eases further on slow machines.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's map, hidden by default.

committed 1mo ago

Hide the tide pool's map unless it is turned on in Settings.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's turning view, map, settings, and keyboard controls, with the caustics taking in the whole view at any turn.

committed 1mo ago

Let the tide pool's view turn, and gather its controls: Q and E, a right-drag, or a two-finger twist turn it and a compass turns it back; R and F zoom; Z and X choose what to drop and Space drops it where you point; every key works from anywhere on the page; a double tap zooms in; buttons step between machines; a map of the whole shelf shows where you are and takes you where you tap; and a settings sheet lists the keys and turns the idle wandering, edge scrolling, and the map on or off.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's simulated surface, caustics and real lights.

committed 1mo ago

Merge main's WASD camera controls into the tide pool's physical water.

committed 1mo ago

Make the tide pool's water physical to look at: its surface is a wave simulation on the graphics card, after Tessendorf's iWave, so drops, swimmers, waders and the wind raise ripples and wakes that spread with deep water's dispersion and bounce off the rock, and the floor is lit by caustics worked out from that surface, as Evan Wallace's WebGL water does; the drawn caustics, ripple rings, sine ripples and light sheen are gone, foam lies in torn patches where waves break, and lamps and the visitor's light are real lights, bright cores that bloom, with the visitor's light casting shadows.

committed 1mo ago

Merge WASD camera controls for the tide pool on the web.

committed 1mo ago

Let W, A, S and D glide the tide pool's view on the web while they are held, with Shift to go faster, from anywhere on the page.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's film and scrapers that graze trails through it.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's visible film and creeping scrapers into the moving water and shore.

committed 1mo ago

Draw the film on the tide pool's rock, a dim grey-green skin that grows where the water lies in daylight, and let the scrapers graze it as they creep slowly along wandering lines, so they leave clean trails through it.

committed 1mo ago

Keep the tide pool's water above sand the sea lets fall, and carry the swell's slope out across the open sea beyond the shore.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's sand fix and open-sea swell.

committed 1mo ago

Let the tide pool's water move its sand: loose sand lies in the hollows and gullies and wherever borers heap their spoil, fast water lifts it and carries it and slow water lets it fall, so gullies scour, spoil heaps wash out and storms rearrange the shore, with the sand drawn pale and smooth where it lies.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's moving sand.

committed 1mo ago

Simulate the tide pool's water as it moves: the sea comes in over a new rocky shore that slopes to it, with ribs, cracks, gullies, boulder fields and a rock sill round the first pool, flooding up the gullies and over the pool's lip as the tide rises and draining away as it falls, while a swell rolls in and breaks into drifting foam. Tabs keep a home pool and swim back to it as the tide turns, and borers settle where the tide reaches so their burrows become pools.

committed 1mo ago

Merge the tide pool's moving water and rocky shore.
